Shōji
#ded5c7
Paper-thin warm-gray with soft beige lift, airy
About Shōji
Put Shōji behind a block of body text and you'll feel the difference immediately: it's not quite as creamy-warm as Bone, and it doesn't recede into cool depth like Catacomb Walls. It reads like a softly lit surface, a light gray with a quiet, paper-like neutrality that stays "in the background" without going flat.
This is the shade I use when Albescent feels too pale and busy white space starts to look sterile. Shōji works well for publishing layouts, SaaS dashboards, and long-form reading apps where panels need to feel clean but not clinical. It's also a solid option for product docs and admin screens, especially when you want UI structure that doesn't fight photography.
Pair it with mid-value grays and restrained color accents. If you lean too far into warm creams, it starts to blur toward tan; push it into harsher cool whites and it can look a little washed out.
